Why Transit?

There are three arguments for transit:

Economy

Transit is a benefit to the state of Georgia. Quality transit makes Georgia more competitive for businesses, conventions, and major events. MARTA is a $6.4 billion asset. In addition, MARTA has created 8,654 jobs and $971 million in economic value to the region. It is estimated that congestion in Atlanta would be 21% worse without transit. This amounts to an additional 174 hours per person in annual congestion time. Nationally current public transit usage reduces U.S. gasoline consumption by 1.4 billion gallons a year. This reduces our dependence on foreign sources of oil.

Environment

Transit in Metro Atlanta carries over 530,000 passenger trips per day. This means a reduction in vehicles on the road and a reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants dangerous to human health. Nationally public transit decreases the American emissions by 37 million metric tons annually. Commuting by public transit is one of the best ways to reduce the carbon emissions of our households.

Quality of Life

Transit is a lifeline for thousands of Georgians without any other means of getting to jobs, school, medical appointments, and shopping. The transit dependent include youth, elderly, people with disabilities, and low-income families. As the population of Georgia ages transit will become an increasing necessity to ensure independence of our senior population and safety on our roads. Choices

Transit provides Georgia residents and visitors with transportation options. It also can provide valuable household savings by eliminating the need for a personal vehicle and all of the expenses that come with it. A two car household that substitutes transit use for one of the cars can save over $6000 a year.

Public transit usage encourages walking and bicycle trips as well.
